Costume Construction for Stage & Screen Foundation Degree/BA Hons

This 2-3 years course introduces you to costume construction within the areas of film and theatre. There are excellent links with the industry providing opportunities to work as part of a production team in the role of the costume maker. The course will prepare you with the necessary skills to become a specialist in the field.

Entry requirements

You will need creative flair and an ability to use your design knowledge and creative skills to interpret ideas. The study of costume within its historical context is an integral part of the course and research into period costume will provide reference and aid throughout the interpretative process. The acquisition of specialist skills such as pattern cutting, garment construction and surface embellishment will equip you with the essential knowledge needed to begin the process of costume construction. Specialist areas such as corsetry, tailoring, print and embroidery will be introduced throughout the course extending and enriching your expertise. The course will offer you an insight into the professional world of film and theatre with external industrial visits and work placement opportunities across a broad range of film / theatre companies nationwide. This will provide you with the experience of applying skills and knowledge and working both within a team and independently in a professional environment.

How will I be assessed?

UCAS Tariff: 260 points from any of the following: GCE Advanced Level, BTEC National Diploma in appropriate subjects, Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art & Design): at merit level. Equivalent international qualifications are acceptable. Those without such qualifications are considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account. All applicants will receive a portfolio-based interview. Entry to the final/top up year for the BA (Hons) will be on successful completion of the Foundation Degree.

Career Opportunities & Progression

Employment opportunities exist on a freelance or employee basis within theatre and film companies on completion of the Foundation Degree. The optional third year, for an honours degree, will enable you to develop individual specialisms and interests via a research dissertation and a final major project. The third year will also further develop professional knowledge and provide opportunities for you to broaden your portfolio by entering national/international competitions.
