AS Law

The course aims to stimulate an interest and enthusiasm for the study of law. The AS can be taken as a qualification in its own right or as the first part of the full A level. The AS provides an introduction to the legal concepts and sources of the legal system in England and Wales. It introduces the Machinery of Justice and the Personnel responsible for implementing the legal system.

Entry requirements

No prior knowledge of the law is required but good written skills are essential.

What will I study?

You will study the following topics: Civil & Criminal Courts; Tribunals, Arbitration & Mediation; Barristers, Solicitors & Judges; Jurors & Lay Magistrates; Legislation & Statutory Interpretation; Judicial Precedent and European Union Law.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by three examinations, which can be taken in January and June each year. There is no coursework.

Career Opportunities & Progression

Employment in the police force, CPS, probation service, local government, civil service, insurance, banking, consumer advice, social work, retailing etc. If taken with the A2 to complete the A level, it carries UCAS points and is suitable for students who wish to progress onto University.
