HNC in Electrical Services for Buildings year 1

The primary objective of the HNC Electrical Services for Buildings is to provide the electrical building & construction industry with a much needed opportunity to gain additional qualifications at Higher National level. The course also provides the opportunity for students to attain one of the mandatory vocational qualifications in the form of the IEE Wiring Regulations (16th Edition). Students who complete the module ?The Design of Electrical Installations? will be able to undertake the national examination for the IEE Wiring Regulations, this examination is not a mandatory part of the HNC but will be offered as an additional and optional examination.

Entry requirements

You will require one of the following: BTEC/EDEXCEL or National Award, Certificate or Diploma in an appropriate vocational area. NVQ trade level III (Electrical Installation 236 Part C) with an appropriate mathematical background. One A level in a suitable subject area. Appropriate alternative qualifications, particularly for mature students, will be considered individually. The basis of student entry whether for typical or mature students will be the expectation of success.

What will I study?

In the first year: Electrical Principles I; The Design of Electrical Installations; Building Services Heating & Related Services; Electronics; and Electronics & Principles. In the second year: Lighting Applications ?A?; Electrical Principles II; Environmental Services (IAQ) 1; Business, Safety & Employability and HNC Individual Project (40 credits).

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a mixture of assessment methods, including case studies, assignments, time constrained assessments and work-based projects. Certain units carry an end-of-year examination.

Career Opportunities & Progression

On successful completion of this course you can progress to a wide range of Higher National Diploma and Degree courses in Building Services and related subjects.
