This 1-year course provides knowledge, skills and understanding necessary as a foundation for a career in mechanical & manufacturing engineering. The course aims to give those entering the engineering industry an understanding of the basic principles and techniques relevant to working in the manufacturing industry and to provide a general grounding in mechanical and manufacturing disciplines. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is equivalent to 1 A level. Due to the structure of this course, on completion you will leave the College with 2 qualifications equivalent to 3 A-Levels, greatly enhancing your future opportunities.
Entry requirements
There are a variety of acceptable entry requirements for this course, but each student?s qualification profile and previous learning experience will be reviewed at interview. However, in terms of acceptable GCSEs, a points system linked to your GCSE grades can be used and the following table can be applied. You would need a total of 12 GCSE Points for this particular course. When calculating your points you should include English/Welsh, Mathematics and a Science subject in the points calculation.

What will I study?
You will study Mandatory Units and Optional Units, which reflect the needs of industry, develop Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and ICT. The units you may study include: Working Safely in an Engineering Environment; Working Efficiently & Effectively in Engineering; Using & Communicating Technical Information; Making Components Using Hand Tools & Fitting Techniques and Using Lathes for Turning Operations. For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales ?fits in? with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising.
How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed by a range of methods, including practical projects, assignments, case studies and course work. Your portfolio will be graded at the end of the course. There may also be some end of term module tests. The awarding body is EMTA (Engineering Marine Training Authority) and at the end of the year you should achieve a PEO I in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering.
Career Opportunities & Progression
As a result of successfully completing this programme, you will be able to apply to join a Modern Apprenticeship Scheme in Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a relevant BTEC Engineering/Manufacturing Certificate or Diploma Programme.
