Foundation Construction Award Wood Occupations - Carpentry & Joinery Route & Welsh Baccalaureate

This 1-year course has been designed for those with no previous experience of carpentry & joinery to provide a foundation for a career within the construction industry. You will benefit from a variety of activities designed to bring out the best of your potential, and enable you to use your skills and knowledge to gain employment in the industry. The qualification recognises your job knowledge and tests the skills you have acquired. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is equivalent to 1 A level. Due to the structure of this course, on completion you will leave the College with 2 qualifications equivalent to 3 A-Levels, greatly enhancing your future opportunities.

Entry requirements

There are a variety of acceptable entry requirements for this course, but each student?s qualification profile and previous learning experience will be reviewed at interview. However, in terms of acceptable GCSEs, a points system linked to your GCSE grades can be used and the following table can be applied. You would need a total of 12 GCSE Points for this particular course. When calculating your points you should include English/Welsh, Mathematics and a Science subject in the points calculation. Points Calculation GCSE Grade = Points Score A* = 8, A = 7, B = 6, C = 5, D = 4, E = 3, F = 2, G = 1.

What will I study?

You will study units that reflect the needs of the construction industry, while further preparing you for a career within this sector. You will also develop Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number. The units you may study include: Handle & Store Materials; Work Relationships; Working Platforms; Basic Wood Jointing Techniques; Preparing & Using Portable Power Tools and Maintain & Using Hand Tools. The course contains both theory and practical carpentry workshop based lessons with many opportunities to work with hand tools. For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales ?fits in? with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via a range of methods, which include practical and job knowledge unit tests, an external examination and Key Skills portfolios.

Career Opportunities & Progression

Successful completion of this programme will enable you to progress onto NVQ 2 (if employed) and/or the Intermediate Construction Award and future employment in the construction industry.
