Education Minister Leighton Andrews helped mark the start of construction work on a new state-of-the-art campus at Coleg Morgannwg, Nantgarw.
The Taf Ely Learning Campus – which is backed by more than £34 million of Welsh Assembly Government funding including almost £7m from the European Regional Development Fund – will replace the college’s existing Rhydyfelin site.
As well as expanding the College and modernising its facilities, the four-storey project will also house a new County Borough Library.
Leighton Andrews said: “This project is about more than simply providing a new building to replace the Rhydyfelin site. “It’s about ensuring that the College is ‘fit for purpose’ and that it provides a 21st Century learning environment which is free of barriers and is able to engage and inspire learners and the wider community.”
Judith Evans, Principal at Coleg Morgannwg, said: “Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter for Coleg Morgannwg and for the wider community. The Taf Ely Learning Campus, our soon-to-be flagship building, will create learning opportunities for people in the south Wales valleys and beyond which will be the envy of the rest of the UK.
“Coleg Morgannwg has always been a trailblazer in the further education sector but this new facility will really set us apart and demonstrate that we are leaders in our field.”
Work on the new campus is expected to be completed in September 2012. |
